Our client is a public university supporting academic, administrative, and operational functions across a diverse campus community. As data plays an increasingly important role in institutional planning and accountability, the institution relies on consistent, trusted reporting to support leadership, departments, and decision makers.

They sought to take a more strategic approach to enterprise reporting by evaluating existing analytics assets and defining a clear path forward. The university wanted to move beyond individual reports toward a coordinated reporting and data strategy that could scale over time. Business Challenge

The customer faced challenges related to fragmented reporting efforts, evolving stakeholder requirements, and limited visibility into how existing reports aligned to broader institutional goals. Solution

Oakwood delivered the engagement using a phased approach that combined reporting delivery with strategic planning. The project began with an Identify Phase focused on stakeholder interviews and requirements gathering to understand reporting needs, data consumers, and institutional priorities. Oakwood reviewed existing Power BI assets, data sources, and reporting practices to establish a current state baseline.

During the Design Phase, Oakwood worked with the client to define reporting standards, data modeling approaches, and design patterns that could be applied consistently across reports. Enterprise reporting requirements were translated into design artifacts, wireframes, and development plans. Oakwood also evaluated data governance considerations and documented opportunities to improve consistency, security, and scalability.

In the Build Phase, Oakwood developed up to three production ready Power BI reports using approved designs and optimized data models. Reports were refined through stakeholder feedback cycles, performance tuning, and validation. Best practices for report structure, calculations, and user experience were documented to support reuse.

The engagement concluded with delivery of an enterprise data and reporting roadmap. This roadmap outlined short, medium, and long term recommendations for reporting, data modeling, governance, and platform evolution. Knowledge transfer sessions ensured the client teams were prepared to maintain existing reports and execute against the roadmap over time.

Outcome

The engagement delivered both immediate and long term value for the institution by combining refined reporting with a clear strategic direction. Production ready Power BI reports improved data visibility and usability for stakeholders while establishing consistent design, data modeling, and performance standards that can be reused across future reporting efforts.
