Overview
A Kansas City-area manufacturing organization experiencing rapid growth through acquisition engaged Oakwood to support a Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migration as part of a broader operational integration initiative. With expanding business operations and newly acquired entities entering the environment, the organization needed a scalable and secure approach to consolidating collaboration, identity, and productivity services across Microsoft 365.
As the company continued growing, leadership recognized the importance of simplifying operational complexity, improving collaboration consistency, and creating a more unified Microsoft 365 environment capable of supporting future acquisitions and long-term scalability.
Business Challenge
The organization was managing separate Microsoft 365 tenant environments as part of ongoing acquisition activity, creating operational complexity surrounding identity management, collaboration, mail flow, file access, and governance consistency.
Leadership needed to consolidate users, Teams environments, SharePoint sites, OneDrive data, and Microsoft 365 services into a more unified operational structure while minimizing disruption to end users and preserving business continuity throughout the migration process.
At the same time, the organization required a partner capable of managing the technical complexity associated with tenant-to-tenant Microsoft 365 migrations, including identity alignment, DNS coordination, Teams migration planning, mail routing continuity, and post-cutover operational validation.
Solution
Oakwood worked closely with organizational stakeholders to assess the source and destination Microsoft 365 environments, document dependencies, and develop a phased tenant migration strategy aligned with operational and acquisition integration objectives.
The engagement included discovery and planning activities related to:
- – Microsoft 365 tenant assessment
- – identity and access discovery
- – Exchange Online migration planning
- – SharePoint and OneDrive migration readiness
- – Microsoft Teams inventory and migration planning
- – mail routing and DNS coordination
- – governance and security posture reviews
- – migration wave planning and cutover coordination
Oakwood designed and executed a structured Microsoft 365 migration approach that included mailbox migrations, OneDrive and SharePoint migrations, Teams migration activities, and post-cutover validation processes. The engagement also included pilot migrations, staged synchronization activities, and hypercare support to help minimize operational disruption during the transition.
By leveraging Microsoft 365 migration tooling and operational planning processes, Oakwood helped streamline the transition while maintaining collaboration continuity and supporting the organization’s broader acquisition integration strategy.
Outcome
The migration helped the organization simplify Microsoft 365 operations, improve collaboration consistency, and create a more scalable operational foundation for future growth and acquisition activity.
By consolidating Microsoft 365 services into a unified environment, the organization improved visibility, reduced operational fragmentation, and strengthened governance across collaboration and productivity systems. The engagement also positioned the organization to more efficiently onboard future acquisitions while supporting long-term operational scalability within the Microsoft ecosystem.
