Overview

The client provides health and dental benefits to federal employees, retirees, and their families across the United States. As a healthcare organization operating at national scale, they depend on accurate, timely data to support reporting, operations, and informed decision making across the business.

They continue to invest in modern data platforms to improve how information is collected, governed, and analyzed. As analytics needs expanded across teams, the organization sought to evaluate and implement Microsoft Fabric as a unified data platform. The client engaged Oakwood Systems Group to provide Fabric consulting services that would help define architecture, establish governance, and enable scalable analytics capabilities aligned with healthcare security and compliance expectations.

Business Challenge

The client needed a clear approach for implementing Microsoft Fabric that could support analytics and reporting across multiple teams while maintaining strong governance and access controls. Existing data workflows and platforms made it difficult to standardize ingestion, storage, and reporting patterns, which limited consistency and scalability.

In addition, they required guidance on how to structure Fabric workspaces, security roles, and connectivity within its Azure environment. The organization needed to ensure that data access followed least privilege principles and aligned with healthcare data handling requirements. The client sought a partner that could provide both strategic direction and hands on implementation support to help accelerate adoption of Fabric while reducing risk.

Solution

Oakwood delivered the engagement using a structured consulting approach that spanned discovery, design, build, and deployment activities. The engagement began with discovery sessions to understand their analytics objectives. reporting priorities, data consumers, and operational constraints. Oakwood reviewed the Azure tenant, existing data platforms, resource organization, access models, and network topology to establish a clear baseline and identify considerations for implementing Microsoft Fabric at scale.

During the design phase, Oakwood worked closely with stakeholders to define a Microsoft Fabric architecture aligned to business and security requirements. This included designing workspace strategy, OneLake usage, logical data organization, and access boundaries across teams and workloads. Role based access models were defined to enforce least privilege access and support separation of duties. Oakwood also designed connectivity and data flow patterns within Azure to ensure secure movement of data between services. Architecture diagrams and security plans were documented and reviewed to confirm alignment before implementation.

In the build phase, Oakwood configured Fabric workspaces, OneLake storage, and core platform components required to support ingestion, modeling, and analytics. Sample ingestion and reporting patterns were implemented to validate the design and provide reference models for future development. Oakwood supported testing, refined configurations based on feedback, and validated permissions and access controls to ensure the environment functioned as intended. Knowledge transfer and documentation were provided to support ongoing use and expansion of the platform.

Outcome

The engagement provided the client with a governed Microsoft Fabric environment that established a strong foundation for enterprise analytics and reporting. Clearly defined workspace structures, security roles, and data organization patterns improved consistency and reduced uncertainty as teams began using the platform. Improved governance and access controls strengthened security and ensured that Fabric usage aligned with healthcare data handling requirements.

Reference ingestion and reporting patterns helped accelerate onboarding and reduced the effort required to build new analytics solutions. With a validated architecture, documented standards, and operational guidance in place, the customer gained the confidence to expand analytics initiatives more quickly and consistently. The engagement positioned them to leverage Microsoft Fabric as a scalable, secure platform that supports long term insight, operational efficiency, and informed decision making.
