SQL Server and Database Platform Modernization

Overview

The client is a leading consumer packaged goods organization with a diverse portfolio of food brands and enterprise systems supporting finance, operations, and shared services. Reliable data platforms are critical to ensuring accurate reporting, system integrations, and business continuity across the organization, particularly as systems evolve and data volumes grow.

They maintained a SQL Server environment supporting key business processes and data flows across multiple teams. To reduce technical risk and align with supported Microsoft platforms, the client engaged Oakwood Systems Group to modernize its SQL Server and related database components. The engagement focused on upgrading legacy systems while preserving stability, performance, and continuity for business users.

Business Challenge

Their SQL Server environment included legacy components running on SQL Server 2008 R2, along with associated SSIS, SSRS, and custom data integration solutions. Continuing to operate on unsupported platforms introduced security risk, compliance concerns, and increasing operational overhead for IT teams.

In addition, the environment supported numerous inbound and outbound data paths across internal and external systems, making upgrades complex and highly interdependent. Any disruption could impact reporting, downstream applications, or business operations. The client required a structured, low-risk approach that would modernize the platform while maintaining confidence in data integrity, performance, and availability.

Solution

Oakwood partnered with the organization to deliver a structured SQL Server and database modernization engagement. The effort began with a detailed assessment of the existing environment, including SQL Server configurations, SSIS packages, SSRS components, custom Multiple Hash solutions, and data integration paths. Oakwood documented the current state to identify dependencies, risks, and upgrade requirements.

Based on this assessment, Oakwood designed an upgrade plan to migrate the environment from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2016 using a greenfield approach. Rather than performing an in-place upgrade, a new SQL Server environment was provisioned, and all databases and integration components were migrated to the new platform. This approach reduced risk and provided a clean, supported foundation.

Oakwood executed the upgrade plan across SQL Server instances, SSIS packages, Multiple Hash components, and inbound and outbound data paths. A structured testing plan was used to validate functionality, performance, and data integrity. Issues identified during testing were remediated prior to cutover to ensure production readiness.

Deployment activities included cutover execution, validation, and delivery of documentation to support ongoing operations. Oakwood coordinated closely with internal project management and technical teams throughout the engagement to ensure clear communication, controlled change, and successful completion of the upgrade.

Outcome

The engagement successfully modernized their SQL Server and database environment, eliminating reliance on unsupported platforms and reducing security and operational risk. Core databases and data integration processes were transitioned to a supported SQL Server version without disruption to business operations.

By adopting a greenfield upgrade approach and validating all data paths and integrations, the client gained improved confidence in platform stability and maintainability. The modernized environment provides a stronger foundation for future enhancements while ensuring critical data systems remain reliable, secure, and supported.
