Tenant to Tenant Azure Migration

Overview

The client provides pharmacy services to correctional facilities, behavioral health organizations, and healthcare providers across the United States. As a healthcare services organization handling sensitive clinical and operational data, they rely on secure, reliable infrastructure to support patient care, compliance, and daily operations.

As the organization evolved, they needed to transition workloads between Azure tenants to better align with its long term infrastructure strategy. This transition required careful planning to maintain security, preserve access, and minimize disruption to production systems. The client engaged Oakwood Systems Group to plan and execute a tenant to tenant Azure migration that would establish a clean, well governed target environment while maintaining continuity of service.

Business Challenge

The organization faced the challenge of migrating Azure workloads between tenants without disrupting critical healthcare operations. Existing resources needed to be inventoried, assessed, and transitioned while maintaining connectivity, access controls, and system availability. The migration also required coordination across environments to ensure workloads could be validated before cutover.

In addition, the target Azure tenant needed to be properly designed to support long term security, governance, and scalability. Network configurations, security policies, and routing required careful alignment to ensure continuity of access and compliance with healthcare data handling expectations. The client needed a clear migration plan and execution partner that could manage risk, validate connectivity, and support users throughout the transition.

Solution

Oakwood delivered the engagement using a structured methodology spanning Identify, Design, Build, and Deploy phases. The project began with the Identify Phase, during which Oakwood acquired access to both source and target Azure environments, inventoried in scope servers and resources, and documented existing topology, networking, and dependencies. Collaboration sessions were conducted to confirm business requirements, migration constraints, and operational considerations.

During the Design Phase, Oakwood documented the architectural design of the target Azure environment. This included defining subscriptions, resource groups, virtual networks, network security groups, routing, and security policies. Azure Migrate analysis was conducted to assess readiness, and architecture diagrams were developed to illustrate the migration path between tenants. A design document outlined migration sequencing, scheduling, and validation steps.

In the Build Phase, Oakwood provisioned the required Azure architecture within the target tenant, including tenant to tenant connectivity and security components. Azure Migrate was configured and used to synchronize in scope servers, and test failovers were performed to validate functionality. Network routing, IP addressing, and connectivity to dependent systems were tested, and Oakwood assisted with end user communication planning.

The Deploy Phase included executing the migration according to the approved schedule, providing post migration support between batches, and validating server access and connectivity. Legacy connections were decommissioned following successful migration, and cleanup activities were completed. Knowledge transfer sessions supported internal teams in managing the new environment.

Outcome

The tenant to tenant migration was completed successfully, providing the client with a clean and well structured Azure environment aligned with its long term infrastructure strategy. Server workloads were transitioned with minimal disruption, and connectivity, access, and functionality were validated throughout each phase of the migration.

Improvements to network design, security policies, and routing strengthened governance and reduced operational risk. The restructured environment improved visibility into resources and simplified ongoing management for internal teams. With workloads stabilized, documentation delivered, and knowledge transfer completed, the client established a scalable cloud foundation that supports current healthcare operations and positions the organization for future growth and infrastructure modernization.
